Thought for the day

“Books will soon be obsolete in the public schools. Scholars will be instructed through the eye. It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture. Our school system will be completely changed inside of ten years."
Thomas Edison 1913

So why has it taken nearly a century longer than Thomas Edison predicted...? Did we have to wait for an internet that could handle moving pictures and sound? Or video cameras on every phone? Did Edison fail to foresee the massive inertia effect of the traditional classroom model? Was it a conspiracy among book publishers and paper pulp manufacturers? Or, like the paperless office, just a case of technological over-optimism?
